Orthodontic treatment for overbite

A slight overbite of around three millimeters is normal and often does not require treatment. Overbites that do not exceed five to six millimeters and are not combined with a deep bite often correct themselves.

Larger overbites of more than eight millimeters should be treated early. If the lower lip gets caught behind the upper front teeth, the overbite can worsen by up to two millimeters per year, increasing the risk of teeth injuries from impacts or falls.

Early orthodontic treatment with braces can correct an overbite and prevent long-term problems such as damage of teeth and gum. At OrthodonticsCPH, we offer specialized treatments to ensure healthy development in both children and adults. Contact us for an assessment and a personalized treatment plan.

Braces for overbite

An overbite can be corrected in several ways, depending on age and severity. For children, a removable brace, called an activator, can be used. This brace stimulates the growth of the lower jaw and is only effective for children and adolescents who are still growing.

For both children and adults, a fixed brace may be used, sometimes in combination with tooth extractions or headgear in rare cases. A fixed brace can also be combined with elastic bands, which are changed daily.

In cases of a large overbite, a combination of orthodontic treatment and surgery may be necessary to achieve the best result. At OrthodonticsCPH, we offer a range of solutions tailored to each individual's needs.

Problems as an adult

An overbite in adults can cause tooth and jaw pain, wear on the teeth, and aesthetic concerns. Treatment often involves fixed braces, tooth extractions, or the use of elastic bands. In severe cases, orthognathic surgery may be required to correct the jaw.

At OrthodonticsCPH, we offer customized solutions for adults. Our specialists create individualized treatment plans to improve both function and appearance.

How does it work?

The metal brackets are glued very strategically and precisely onto each tooth. When they are connected with a suitable metal wire, they will eventually line up in a straight line. When the teeth are nicely aligned in both the jaws, small elastics bands are often used to pull the teeth together to consolidate the teeth in both jaws for optimal function and aesthetics.

How does it feel?

Braces may feel rough and sharp on the surface when wearing them initially. Bear in mind that the inner surface of your mouth is only familiar to the smoothness of the surface of your teeth.

It may therefore, take some time – getting use to, before your mucous membranes develop tougher “skin” which can tolerate the different surfaces of your braces. In the first couple of days of wearing braces, your teeth may be soar.
